California Proposition 65, officially known as the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986, requires businesses to provide warnings if a product may expose consumers in California to certain chemicals identified by the State of California as causing cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive harm.
The list includes more than 900 substances and is updated regularly.
Many vitamins, minerals, and plant-based ingredients naturally absorb trace amounts of elements from the soil and environment in which they are grown. Because California has established very conservative exposure thresholds, some dietary supplements may require a Proposition 65 warning even when they comply with applicable federal safety standards.
